One of the most pressing concerns in Southern California currently is the increased risk of wildfire due to climate change. The UC Irvine Climate Collaboration brings together researchers in civil and environmental engineering, Earth system science, ecology and evolutionary biology, and other departments to study fires from all angles. The goal is to provide local and state government agencies, community organizations, businesses and property owners precise information that they can use to mitigate disaster risk. Collaborating With a Purpose

April 23, 2026

The UC Irvine Climate Collaboration was launched in early 2025 with a goal of tapping into diverse talents across campus to bring creative and innovative perspectives together around the profound climate challenges facing humanity today. The organization focuses resources on building interdisciplinary collaborations with external partners, a model designed to allow UC Irvine to bring trusted, scientific information forward for decision-makers, while preparing UC Irvine's talented and motivated student body for tomorrow's sustainability workforce needs.

“This recognition reflects the collective work of many people, including students, postdocs and collaborators, with whom I’ve had the honor of working,” says Amir AghaKouchak, UC Irvine Chancellor’s Professor of civil and environmental engineering and director of the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing. “We cannot prevent hazards from occurring, but through better science, we can help prevent them from becoming human disasters.” Steve Zylius / UC Irvine

Water, Warming and a World at Risk

April 22, 2026

In the six decades since it was founded, UC Irvine has garnered a reputation as an engine of solutions-oriented research and innovation. Having been on campus for a quarter of those 60 years, Amir AghaKouchak, Chancellor's Professor of civil and environmental engineering and director of the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing, has helped increase the institution's renown with his lab group's research on the effects of water resources and climate extremes on the environment and infrastructure systems.

UC Irvine-led Study Achieves Brain-controlled...

April 16, 2026

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, Caltech and Keck School of Medicine of USC have developed a bidirectional brain-computer interface that allows a person to control a robotic walking exoskeleton using brain signals and receive artificial leg sensation through direct electrical stimulation of the sensory cortex. The project is the first implementation of a BDBCI for walking that incorporates bilateral interhemispheric leg sensorimotor brain areas and represents a critical step toward restoring full ambulatory function in individuals living with spinal cord injury and paraplegia.
