Athanasiou Elected to American Academy...
Kyriacos A. Athanasiou, Henry Samueli Chair in Engineering and Distinguished Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. He is one of six UCI faculty to be selected this year.
UC Irvine-led Study Achieves Brain-controlled...
Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, Caltech and Keck School of Medicine of USC have developed a bidirectional brain-computer interface that allows a person to control a robotic walking exoskeleton using brain signals and receive artificial leg sensation through direct electrical stimulation of the sensory cortex. The project is the first implementation of a BDBCI for walking that incorporates bilateral interhemispheric leg sensorimotor brain areas and represents a critical step toward restoring full ambulatory function in individuals living with spinal cord injury and paraplegia.
Adeola Adekoba Wins ASEE PSW Outstanding...
Fourth-year biomedical engineering student Adeola Adekoba was recognized with the Outstanding Undergraduate Student award by the American Society for Engineering Education - Pacific Southwest Section. He will receive this award at the ASEE Zone IV Conference at Cal Poly Pomona University on April 16-18.
Preventing Epilepsy Progression and...
Most people associate epilepsy with seizures, but what many don’t realize is that the abnormal brain activity patterns associated with epilepsy can also negatively impact the brain, affecting memory, communication and learning. As an associate professor of anatomy and neurobiology in the UC Irvine School of Medicine and a board-certified child neurologist at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), Jennifer Gelinas, MD, PhD, understands how epileptic activity can disrupt intellectual development.
Can Wearable Tech Finally Get Blood...
Blood pressure is one of the most important measurements in healthcare. Yet how we track it hasn’t changed much in more than a century.
Is This the Breakthrough Drug Development...
Modern drug discovery is better than it’s ever been. We can sequence genomes in hours, predict how proteins behave, and design molecules with increasing precision.
Grosberg Creates Way to Research Sex-based...
Anna Grosberg, UCI professor of biomedical engineering, and Ph.D. student Mary Tran have made the first characterization of the difference between male and female neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVMs) in vitro tissues. Their work was just published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and offers a way to study sex-based variations in cardiac tissues and function.
